Emmett Soffey, Head Coach - Grades 7/8 Team,
President and Co-Founder of Bellevue East Lacrosse
Emmet
says that people often ask him how he got
started in lacrosse. He tells them that it all
started with a baseball try out gone berserk.
Emmet was a starting shortstop from second grade
until 7th grade, when he moved to a new school.
When he tried out for the baseball team at the
new school, the try outs lasted all day--and he
never even got a chance to throw a ball, not
once! At the very end of the day, he was
allowed up to the plate and was thrown a single pitch.
With Emmett still standing in the batter's box, the coach suddenly announced that the try
outs were over for the day. The next day
he found his name on the "cut list." After
only one pitch! Jheez!
That spring, when the door closed on baseball, the window opened for lacrosse. Emmett says that he had finally found the sport with the adrenaline level that helped him to never look back. In fact, he says that he has nothing but pity for those poor souls standing around in right field, hoping for a chance at a ball.
Emmet started his lacrosse
coaching career as an Assistant Coach with
the Eastside Eagles in 2004, progressing through
different levels of coaching. In the
spring of 2006, Mike Reynolds and Emmet started
Bellevue East Lacrosse. Since then, Emmett
has been the Head Coach of Bellevue East's 5/6
or 7/8 team, depending on the season. He
has also served as the Assistant Coach to
Bellevue East's JV and Varsity teams since
the formation of the club. Emmett has
Level 1 and Level 2 coaching certification with
the US Lacrosse Coaches Education Program.
Emmett has this advice for girls who are
interested in trying lacrosse: "Forget
about who you are or what you are. The stick is
the great equalizer. Find a wall, get good at
catching and throwing and you can compete. No
other sport offers girls this opportunity!"
